The issues surrounding the iPhone 4’s reception have been endlessly debated, and while Apple are now offering free cases as a workaround, the prospective smartphone buyer may well be re-considering their handset options. One of the most popular (and critically acclaimed) ‘iPhone killers’ is the Android-powered HTC Desire. From navigation app perspective, we look for two key functions in any new GPS-enabled handset.

The ability to show the application with clarity and crucially the power to run a complex application like CoPilot – and on these criteria the HTC Desire certainly delivers.

The Desire’s 3.7” AMOLED display (as also seen in the Google Nexus One) is possibly the clearest screen that we’ve tested CoPilot Live on, while it’s 1GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon processor means that apps run at lightning speed compared to the first generation of Android-based smartphones. Some community reports suggest that installing the Froyo 2.2 Android OS update makes app performance faster still, although it’s worth pointing out that Froyo it is not officially available for the Desire – and it may well be some time before it is.

The Desire is bursting with the features you would expect from a high-end phone. Here’s a few that we think standout.

- Internet tethering through 3G – no need for a separate data plan to connect your laptop to the web via the HTC Desire

- 5 mega pixel autofocus camera with flash

- FM radio

- 3.5mm headphone socket (unlike many previous HTC phones that quite annoyingly had a mini USB connector)

- MicroSD card slot for memory expansion (and to store CoPilot Live’s maps of course)

The Desire can also multi-task with ease. Something of a new phenomena to its headline grabbing rival and still beyond the capabilities of most smartphones and men – apparently.

On the navigation front, CoPilot Live runs in portrait or landscape and takes full advantage of that fantastic screen. GPS performance is reported as being good too, and the phone’s loudspeaker provides clear voice directions.

It all adds up to phone that is worthy of its name.

Got CoPilot Live running on a HTC Desire? Post a video of it to YouTube and send us the link – there’s a highly-coveted CoPilot Live coffee mug for our favourite one.

CoPilot Live is available for the HTC Desire via Android Market or from our own webstore

The phone itself is available from free on a pay monthly contract, for example £30 per month through Vodafone

Checkout a snapshot of CoPilot Live on the Desire at our Flickr Gallery http

Windows Mobile 6.5 customers can now easily buy and download CoPilot Live straight to their phone through their on-device app store.

While it’s fair to say that Windows Mobile has struggled to maintain market share compared with the iOS4 and Android platforms, there are some great Windows Mobile devices available that can provide a fantastic navigation experience.

CoPilot Live v8 is initially available on Windows Mobile Marketplace in UK only for £57.69 and includes complete maps of Western and Eastern Europe.

Once you have purchased and installed the app, you will then need download maps to your phone via Wi-Fi. You can download full European maps to your phone or alternatively just the regions you need for your trip to save space.

A North America version is also available via Windows Mobile Marketplace in USA, including maps of USA and Canada.

We are working to bring both apps to Windows Mobile Marketplace in more countries soon.

You can also buy CoPilot Live for Windows Mobile from our own web store

DPD is a subsidiary of GeoPost UK, a division of French postal group, La Poste. It employs 5,000 people in the UK and operates more than 1,700 vehicles from over 40 locations. The award recognised the work of DPD UK in implementing ‘Predict’, the first one hour time window for the delivery of packages across the UK.

Shoppers who purchase goods shipped through DPD UK can now receive a free SMS message or email giving them a precise one hour window when their parcel will be delivered.

Okay, they may be your closest friends but it doesn’t necessarily mean they live on your door step. Or even in the same town.

It’s no problem with CoPilot Live v8. With its handy Multiple Stops feature, you can plan the journey to your ultimate destination with pick up points along the way – so nobody need miss the party. And with the ability to enter more than 20 stops or waypoints and optimise the route for the most efficient way to go, perhaps it’s time to hire the stretch limo after all…

Here’s how to create a multiple stop trip (CoPilot Live 7 and v8):

Menu > Plan Edit Trip > Add Stop

Choose the destination entry method from the menu selection and repeat process until all stops have been added.

To Optimise the route between all stops go to:

Options > Optimise Stops

If you would prefer to manually re-order the routing for the journey, for example, changing the final destination, simply click on the ‘stop’ you want to move and use the arrows on the left hand side to move the position of the stop within the journey profile.

Here’s hoping you have a great time – and remember the sun-block!

On Monday this week a further CoPilot Live UK + Ireland app update became available for download. This is designed to prevent an issue relating to automatic safety camera updates seen in our recent iPhone 4 / iOS4 Mutlitasking release.

If you have already downloaded and installed this, you may still see an error message the first time you start your app where “integrating updates” freezes. You can solve this issue by following these steps:

1. If you see the error message asking you to delete the POI set “poi_uk.safetycam” please choose “Yes”.

2. “Integrating updates” will then begin and possibly hang before completion. You will need to completely close CoPilot Live as follows:

3. Tap the iPhone “Home” button once. CoPilot Live will disappear from the screen

4. Tap the Home button twice to bring-up the multitasking panel (This is located at the bottom of the screen)

5. Press and hold the CoPilot icon. After a few seconds the icon will begin to wobble

6. Press the ‘-‘ ball on the CoPilot icon to close the app completely

7. Re-start CoPilot Live. POI integration should now run and complete properly

Once you have restarted, you should check for the latest safety camera database download

1. From the CoPilot Live menu, select MENU > UPDATES

2. Select the Safety Camera update if available

3. The latest camera database will be downloaded

4. Exit CoPilot completely using multitasking (as outlined in the instrutions above) and restart to continue using CoPilot Live

We hope that this helps you get the best out of CoPilot Live v8 and your iPhone!

We were very pleased to see that our CoPilot Live app update was approved by Apple over the weekend, bringing support for iPhone 4 and multitasking in iOS4.

Thanks to everyone who contacted us over the weekend – we’d like to respond to a couple of common comment threads:

CoPilot Live does not exit when you press the iPhone ‘Home’ button. One of the key enhancements brought by iOS4 is multitasking – the ability to run more than one application at a time on an iPhone. With CoPilot Live, this enables you to receive navigation guidance when on a phone call or while using other apps.

However, as some have pointed out, there might be many instances where you would want to exit CoPilot rather than keep it running in the background – not least to conserve battery power.

CoPilot Live is already designed to switch-off GPS receiving after 10 minutes if a position fix is not detected for 10 minutes or more. But there is a way to exit CoPilot Live completely. For those of you still getting to grips with iPhone multitasking, here’s how:

1) Tap the iPhone “Home” button once (Home button = the main circular button on the front of the phone) CoPilot Live will disappear from the screen

2) Tap the Home button twice to bring-up the multitasking panel

3) Press and hold the CoPilot icon. After a few seconds the icon will begin to wobble

4) Press the ‘-‘ ball on the CoPilot icon to close the app completely

Safety Camera Error Message. A number of customers have reported seeing an error message when running the latest updated CoPilot Live app for the first time. To avoid seeing this again, exit CoPilot and re-start the app. The problem should not reoccur.

As ever, we are reviewing all our customer feedback on a continuous basis. We can’t respond to everyone individually, but please rest assured we are paying attention.

We’ll have another update soon which improves performance further.

It didn’t take too long after Wednesday’s victory to realise that things hadn’t quite gone according to plan in the football – and coming second in the group stages would mean a significant alteration in the predicated travelling details of many following fans.

Fortunately, CoPilot Live v8 users in South Africa can simply change their stadium destination and enjoy their alternative route courtesy of full, voice guided, turn-by-turn instructions and a choice of mapping views. The Points Of Interest database should also prove helpful in finding some hastily arranged accommodation.

Again for those planning to follow England and not packing CoPilot Live on their mobile, a Turn List of directions from Cape Town to the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein can be downloaded here

Finally, in anticpation of England’s game with Germany on Sunday, we’ve asked some of our German colleagues to participate as guests in this week’s CoPilot Live Pundits Panel. Not suprisingly, they remain optimistic about their chances.

For the record, over half of the participants in last week’s panel correctly predicted the outcome of the Slovenian game – let’s hope they prove just as successful this week!
